Modern science no longer views the sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) simply as fruit — it is increasingly described as a "functional food," or even "sweet medicine" (Motyleva et al., 2022). Laboratory analyses and clinical studies from around the world reveal that this small fruit is packed with phytochemicals capable of protecting our cells from aging, calming inflammation, fighting diabetes, and even interfering with the processes behind cancer development.

A Biochemical Arsenal: What Makes Cherries a Superfood

The foundation of the sweet cherry's health benefits lies in its remarkably rich and complex nutritional profile. Although more than 80% of the fruit is water, and a single cup (about 150g) contains only around 63 calories, its nutrient density is striking (Gonçalves et al., 2024). Cherries are an excellent source of vitamin C, a key antioxidant that protects cells from free-radical damage, supports the immune system, and aids collagen synthesis. They also contain vitamin A (as beta-carotene), B vitamins, and important minerals — most notably potassium (up to 230mg per 100g), phosphorus, magnesium and calcium (Gonçalves et al., 2024; Motyleva et al., 2022).

Polyphenols: The Real Power Behind Cherries

The real "magic" lies in the plant's secondary metabolites — polyphenols. Cherries rank among the fruits with the highest antioxidant capacity (Wani et al., 2014), and their polyphenol composition is remarkably diverse. Four main groups can be distinguished (Gonçalves et al., 2024; Blando & Oomah, 2019; Reyes-Manríquez et al., 2022):

Anthocyanins
The pigments responsible for the red-to-purple colour of the fruit. The dominant anthocyanin in sweet cherries is cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside.
Hydroxycinnamic acids
Mainly neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acid, exceptionally effective at scavenging free radicals.
Flavonols
Primarily quercetin and kaempferol, known for their strong anti-inflammatory properties.
Flavan-3-ols
Catechins and epicatechins, which support cardiovascular health.

A Shield Against Oxidative Stress and Chronic Inflammation

Oxidative stress, caused by an excess of reactive oxygen species, is now considered one of the main drivers of premature aging and many chronic diseases. Polyphenols in cherries act as effective "scavengers" of these free radicals — anthocyanins and vitamin C neutralize reactive oxygen species, protecting cell membranes, lipids, and even DNA from damage (Gonçalves et al., 2024; Hussain et al., 2021).

Studies have shown that cherry extracts can inhibit key inflammatory enzymes — cyclooxygenase COX-1 and COX-2 — through a mechanism similar to that of common anti-inflammatory drugs, but without their unwanted side effects (Hussain et al., 2021; Blando & Oomah, 2019). Human clinical trials have confirmed that regular consumption of sweet cherries (for example, 280g daily for 28 days) leads to a significant reduction in C-reactive protein (CRP), a key marker of systemic inflammation (Gonçalves et al., 2024; Zelený et al., 2025). This effect is also used in gout prevention, as cherry consumption has been shown to lower plasma uric acid levels (Blando & Oomah, 2019).

A Guardian of the Heart and Blood Vessels

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, and cherries offer strong natural protection. Their high potassium content is key to regulating blood pressure and reducing stroke risk (Gonçalves et al., 2024). Cherry polyphenols go further still — they help prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, a critical step in the development of atherosclerosis. Research on endothelial cells has shown that cyanidin-3-glucoside improves their function and reduces the formation of cells that clog blood vessels. Cherry consumption is thus linked to lower serum triglycerides and total cholesterol (Gonçalves et al., 2024; Blando & Oomah, 2019).

A Sweet Weapon Against Diabetes

Can a sweet fruit help manage diabetes? In the case of cherries, the answer is yes. Sweet cherries have a relatively low glycemic index, thanks to their fibre content and their particular sugar composition, in which fructose and sorbitol make up a significant share (Gonçalves et al., 2024; Zelený et al., 2025). Their real antidiabetic potential, however, once again lies in their phytochemicals:

Anti-Cancer Potential

One of the most intensively researched areas is the effect of cherries on cancer prevention. Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are closely linked to carcinogenesis, and cherry polyphenols — particularly cyanidins — show strong anti-mutagenic properties (Gonçalves et al., 2024).

Sweet cherry extracts have demonstrated in vitro anti-cancer activity against, for example, human breast, colon, and stomach cancer cells (Hussain et al., 2021; Gonçalves et al., 2024). Besides polyphenols, cherries also contain perillyl alcohol, a monoterpene highly effective against the formation and growth of many types of cancer (Wani et al., 2014).
