Introducing New Plum Varieties for the 2026 Season: Tophit, Topend Plus, and Silvia
Introducing New Plum Varieties for the 2026 Season: Tophit, Topend Plus, and Silvia
The 2026 plum season will bring a combination of German technological precision and Romanian growing tradition to our gardens. We have prepared a selection of three varieties covering the period from August to mid-October. Whether you are looking for massive fruits for fresh consumption, a Sharka-resistant variety, or a specialist for processing, these novelties will meet even the most demanding expectations.
“Modern plum breeding today focuses on three main factors: extending the harvest season, tolerance to the Sharka virus (PPV), and extreme fruit size. Varieties like Tophit and Topend Plus are clear proof that the season for fresh fruit does not have to end with the arrival of autumn.”
Let’s take a detailed look at the characteristics of these three favorites, which will appear in our offer during the year 2026.
1. Tophit®: The German Giant for Late Harvest
The 'Tophit®' variety is a modern German cross between 'Čačanská najbolja' and 'President'. It ranks among the licensed varieties that currently dominate the European market due to its exceptional commercial value.
Massive Fruits and High Sugar Content
Tophit is famous for its size—individual fruits can reach a weight of up to 75 grams. The flesh is yellow-green, firm, and very juicy, with an excellent harmonious sweet taste. Due to its high sugar content, this variety is highly valued not only for fresh consumption but also for producing high-quality distillates.
- Ripening: Matures very late, usually at the end of September.
- Self-fertility: It is fully self-fertile, ensuring yield stability even without the presence of other varieties.
- Resilience: Its tolerance to the Sharka virus (Plum Pox Virus) is significant. The tree grows moderately vigorously and enters bearing very early.
2. Topend Plus®: Extending the Season to the Maximum
The 'Topend Plus®' variety represents another breakthrough in German breeding (a cross of 'Čačanská najbolja' × 'Valor'). It is one of the latest plums on the market today.
Champion in Storability and Health
The main trump card of this variety is the harvest window, which extends from late September to mid-October. The fruits hardly rot at all and last a very long time on the tree. Furthermore, it exhibits high tolerance to resistance against Sharka and does not suffer from rust or monilia.
- Fruit: Very large (approx. 65 g), oval, steel-blue color with a heavy bloom and firm light-yellow flesh.
- Taste: Excellent sweet-tart flavor, aromatic with high sugar levels.
- Use: A versatile variety suitable for fresh consumption, canning, distilling (thanks to the sugar), and long-term storage in cold rooms.
3. Silvia: The Romanian Crunchy Delicacy
From Romania, from the Piteşti – Mărăcineni institute, comes the 'Silvia' variety. It is a cross of 'Renclod Althan' and 'Early Rivers', registered in 1979.
Excellent Table Variety
Silvia is a favorite for those who love crunchy fruit. Its white-yellowish flesh is exceptionally firm and juicy. It ripens in the first decade of August (Aug 1st – 10th), perfectly filling the mid-summer period.
- Appearance: Fruits are large (55 g), elliptical (oval), violet-blue in color with a thick layer of grey-blue bloom.
- Pollination: It is partially self-fertile and serves as an excellent pollinator for other varieties in the orchard.
- Resilience: Resistant to red leaf spot, showing medium sensitivity to monilia and Sharka.
