The 'Red Cap' apple tree is a winter variety, a mutation of 'Red Delicious'.
The fruits are medium to large, conical in shape with the typical five spurs on the calyx. The colour is dark red, glossy, often with a slight waxy coating. The flesh is light, firm, juicy, with a distinctive sweet taste and a delicate aroma.
The apple ripens in late September to early October; the fruit is suitable for harvesting when it reaches full colour. Under suitable storage conditions, the fruit will last until March, retaining its quality and flavour.
The growth is medium, with a compact and well-branched crown; suitable for intensive cultivation. The apple tree has an early onset of fruiting, with a regular and abundant crop; it is recommended to thin the fruit to ensure optimum size and quality. Medium resistance to common apple tree diseases; preventive protection against scab and powdery mildew is recommended.
The M26 rootstock is a medium-growing rootstock which limits the tree size to approximately 2,5-3,5 metres, making harvesting and maintenance easier.
A sunny site with fertile and permeable soil is recommended; avoid sites with high water tables.
The pollinator, 'Red Cap' is partially self-pollinating, but planting near other varieties such as 'Golden Delicious' or 'Gala' is recommended to increase yield.
Regular pruning promotes healthy growth and a quality crop; shaping into an open crown for better light is recommended.
'Red Cap' is an attractive apple variety with excellent flavour, suitable for both gardeners and fruit growers looking for a quality and reliable crop.
