Solaris is one of the most popular and reliable grape varieties today. This German cultivar, whose name is derived from the word "sun," is a real gift for all gardeners and winemakers looking for a combination of minimal effort and maximum benefit. Solaris is the ideal choice for organic cultivation and, thanks to its extreme earliness, it also thrives in marginal and colder areas.
A key feature of Solaris is its exceptional resistance. As a top inter-specific (PIWI) variety, it is characterized by very high resistance to major fungal diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew. In practice, this means that it requires almost no chemical protection, allowing you to grow healthy grapes with respect for nature. It is also very resistant to winter frosts.
Solaris is a champion in terms of ripening speed. You can expect a harvest from mid-August to early September, making it one of the earliest varieties ever. It has vigorous growth and will reward you with high and regular yields. Its medium-sized clusters bear amber-yellow berries that can accumulate extremely high sugar content. The taste of the grapes is deliciously sweet, with an attractive and delicate muscat-herbal aroma.
The grapes are excellent for direct consumption, but their true potential is revealed in wine production. Wines from Solaris are full-bodied, extractive, and distinctly aromatic, with notes of tropical fruits such as pineapple and mango, complemented by hazelnuts and citrus. Thanks to their high sugar content, they are ideal for producing naturally sweeter wines, but also full-bodied dry varieties with a higher alcohol content.
Cultivation is not difficult, requiring a sunny location for perfect ripening and well-drained soil with sufficient nutrients. Thanks to its adaptability and resistance, it is an ideal vine for beginners and experienced growers who want a quality harvest without chemicals.
