Léon Millot is a blue grape variety that belongs to the proven and popular PIWI varieties, valued especially for its exceptional resistance and ability to produce quality wines even in colder climates. These characteristics make it an ideal choice for organic viticulture and for gardeners looking for a reliable and undemanding variety.
The variety was bred in 1911 in Alsace (France) by Eugen Kuhlmann. It was created by crossing American grapevine species (Vitis riparia x Vitis rupestris) with the European variety Goldriesling (Vitis vinifera).
Its interspecific origin predestines it for the PIWI category (from the German pilzwiderstandsfähig – resistant to fungal diseases). Genes from American grapevine species have given it a high natural resistance to major fungal diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew. In addition, it is extremely resistant to winter frosts. As a result, it does not require intensive chemical protection and thrives even in areas where classic European varieties would not succeed.
Léon Millot is characterized by vigorous growth, so it is suitable for training on longer canes with firm support. Its early ripening (about a week before Chasselas) makes it an ideal candidate for marginal and higher-altitude wine-growing areas. The bunches are small to medium in size, with small, dark blue berries with a strong bloom. As the berries are very sweet, they need to be protected from wasps and birds during ripening.
