The Moldova grape variety, which originates from Moldova, is a popular late table variety prized for its resistance and excellent taste. It ripens in late September and early October. This variety is characterized by strong and vigorous growth, so it thrives best on tall trellises and horizontal pergolas. Moldova is self-pollinating and known for its high and regular yield.
The clusters are large, conical to cylindrical-conical in shape, moderately dense and can weigh from 400 to 600 grams, sometimes up to one kilogram. The berries are also large, oval, weighing 6 to 8 grams, and are dark blue to purple in color. The flesh is fleshy, crisp and juicy, with a delicious and harmonious taste. The firm and thick skin of the berries ensures good transportability and long shelf life. Ripe bunches last a long time on the vine without losing quality and can be stored in a cool place for up to five months.
One of the key characteristics of the Moldova variety is its high resistance to fungal diseases such as gray mold, powdery mildew, and downy mildew. It belongs to the so-called interspecific (PIWI) varieties, which often do not require chemical protection. At the same time, it is frost-resistant down to -23 °C. It requires a sunny location and airy, permeable, loamy-sandy soil for cultivation. To achieve a high-quality harvest, pruning may be recommended. The fruits are suitable for direct consumption as well as for further processing, such as jams, compotes, or drying into raisins.
