Alvar is a licensed Finnish variety from 1998, bred as a partner for Aino. It was created by crossing the low Canadian variety 'Brunswick' and the tall variety 'June'.
Fruits (quality and characteristics): The fruits are large, dark blue and relatively firm. The taste is described as sweet and delicate. They ripen from the beginning of August. Their key advantage is their excellent storability; they can last almost a month in cold storage without any loss of quality.
Plant (Growing characteristics): The bush grows vigorously, is taller and more robust than Aino, reaching a height of 80–110 cm and a width of around 1 meter. It is extremely frost-resistant and disease-resistant. To reach its maximum potential, it requires cross-pollination with the Aino variety. Its greatest asset is its very high yield, averaging 1230 g per bush, with the potential to exceed 2.2 kg (approximately 4 liters) in good years.
Advantages and disadvantages: Its greatest advantages are its extremely high yield, large fruits, and excellent storability. It is a reliable and highly productive variety.
