Aino is a licensed (PBR) Finnish variety that was introduced to the market by the MTT (now LUKE) research center in 1998. It was created by crossing the 'Arne' and 'Augusta' varieties. It is important to note that 'Aino' is a cultivar, i.e., a bred variety created by crossing. Specifically, it is a hybrid between the highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) and the lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium). These crossbreeds are made with the aim of obtaining plants with better characteristics, such as higher frost resistance, better fruit taste, or more compact growth, which is also the case with the 'Aino' variety.
Fruits (Quality and characteristics): The fruits are large and deep blue. The taste is described as sweet, delicate, and aromatic, and is rated as tastier than the Alvar variety. They ripen from the beginning of August over a period of 2-3 weeks. They are suitable for direct consumption and freezing.
Plant (Cultivation characteristics): The shrub has dense, robust, and stocky growth. It is shorter, growing to a height of 70 cm and a width of 1 meter. The leaves are large, glossy green, and turn red in the fall. It is extremely frost-resistant (Finnish zones I-IV) and resistant to diseases and pests. For maximum yield, it requires cross-pollination, ideally with the Alvar variety. The average yield in 1992-97 was 840 g per bush.
Advantages and disadvantages: The main advantages are its excellent, aromatic taste and high frost resistance. The bush is healthy and has compact growth.
