Picture a perfect spring day. The sour cherry orchard is veiled in silvery-white blossoms, bees are hard at work, and the promise of a bountiful summer harvest hangs in the air. Yet just a few damp days are enough to turn this idyll into a nightmare. Blossoms turn brown, wither and remain hanging on the branches like a sad memento, while leaves drop prematurely well before the end of summer. Growing the sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) is not just about correct pruning and fertilising – it is a constant, often invisible battle against microscopic enemies. Who are these silent killers capable of wiping out a grower's entire year of work, and what weapons do modern science and breeding offer in defence?
Two Major Threats: Fungal Diseases as Every Grower's Nightmare
Although older literature often describes sour cherries as relatively resistant to pests and diseases compared with other fruit species (Ahmad et al., 2017; Yadav et al., 2024), the reality in commercial orchards tells a different story. One of the main goals of every modern sour cherry breeding programme is achieving disease resistance. The reason lies in two specific fungal pathogens that cause extreme losses and directly threaten the very existence of sour cherry production: the cause of cherry leaf spot (Blumeriella jaapii) and the causal agents of brown rot and blossom blight (Monilinia spp.) (Korićanac et al., 2023; Schuster & Wolfram, 2008).

Predictive models point to an almost unforgiving equation: if the critical period (March and April) includes more than 11 days with relative humidity above 80%, the result is 100% brown rot infection at harvest (Korićanac et al., 2023). Weather fluctuations and the resulting brown rot epidemics are among the main reasons for the huge year-to-year swings in sour cherry yields (Apáti & Gonda, 2010).
Traditional Defence: Chemical Warfare and Its Limits
How do growers defend their orchards today? In intensive sour cherry production, effective control of these two fungi requires five to seven fungicide treatments per season. In wet weather, this number has to be increased even further (Korićanac et al., 2023).
This approach, however, has serious cracks. Chemical sprays place a heavy burden on the environment and rapidly drive up production costs (Korićanac et al., 2023). For small growers and family orchards, keeping up with such a strict plant-health regime is often unrealistic. Economists point out that poor health caused by brown rot and leaf spot is the main reason why small orchards fail to reach high yields and the required fruit quality, gradually pushing them out of the market (Apáti & Gonda, 2010).
Modern Strategy: Genetics as the Ultimate Weapon
As chemical control runs up against its economic and ecological limits, science has turned to nature itself. Identifying and breeding tolerant or fully resistant genotypes is now an absolute priority (Korićanac et al., 2023).
Searching in the Wild: Serbian Native Treasures
Researchers at the Fruit Research Institute in Čačak, Serbia, focused on mapping old, local genotypes (landraces) in western Serbia. They found that natural selection had produced trees with remarkable resilience. In field resistance trials, the genotypes labelled 'GV-6' and 'GV-10' stood out in particular – they showed the best resistance to both cherry leaf spot and blossom blight, with only minimal, negligible damage recorded. These genotypes now represent an important genetic resource for future breeding (Korićanac et al., 2023). The traditional Serbian variety 'Oblačinska' is also well known, highly valued for its strong resistance to leaf spot and fruit rot (Milosevic & Milosevic, 2012).
Laboratory Triumphs: The German Breeding Programme
At the German institute in Dresden-Pillnitz, targeted crossing is under way to create the perfect sour cherry. The results clearly show how difficult it is to defeat both enemies at once. Modern varieties 'Jade' and 'Achat', for example, show very low susceptibility to blossom blight, but remain susceptible to leaf spot (Schuster & Wolfram, 2008).
The real triumph of this programme is the newest variety, 'Rubellit' (a cross of 'Köröser' and 'Schattenmorelle'). It finally combines high yield and fruit quality with comprehensive defence – showing low susceptibility to both major enemies, brown rot and leaf spot alike (Schuster & Wolfram, 2008).

When choosing new plantings, it pays to favour varieties with proven resistance to both major diseases, while also keeping an eye on humidity conditions during bloom – March and April are what decide whether an orchard faces a calm season or a fight for the harvest.
