Pawpaw tree

Asimina triloba (pawpaw) is a deciduous tree of the Annonaceae family, unique as the only representative of this otherwise tropical family in the temperate zone of North America. Botanically, it is characterized by large, drooping leaves and dark purple flowers pollinated by insects. The fruit is a large berry (the largest native fruit in the US) with yellow, creamy pulp resembling pudding and large seeds. Nutritionally, it differs from common fruits: it has a high energy value, above-average protein content (it contains all essential amino acids), fats, and minerals (potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese). Its phytochemical profile is defined by the presence of unique annonaceous acetogenins (especially in the seeds and skin), which are being intensively studied for their powerful anti-tumor effects. The flesh is rich in phenolic antioxidants.
