'Frumos de Voinești' (translating to "Beauty of Voinești") is a high-quality autumn apple variety bred in Romania by crossing the famous varieties 'Jonathan' and 'Frumos de Boskoop'. It is prized for its visually attractive fruits with exceptional, harmonious flavor and fine, melting flesh. Although it requires protection against scab, its high yield and taste qualities make it very popular.

Variety Characteristics

Tree

• Growth: Medium to strong. The crown is spherical, dense, and slightly elongated.
• Productivity: Bears fruit predominantly on short wood (spurs).
• Pollination: It is self-sterile (semi-sterile) and requires a pollinator. However, it is a good pollinator for other apple trees.

Fruit

• Size and Weight: Medium to large, 160 – 180 g.
• Shape and Color: Truncated conical to spherical. The skin is thin, smooth, with a golden-yellow base covered by a vibrant red-orange blush and darker ruby stripes.
• Flesh: White-yellow, fine, very juicy, and melting.
• Taste: Excellent, sweet with balanced acidity, intensely aromatic (heritage from Jonathan).
• Usage: Universal – fresh consumption and processing.

Resistance and Requirements

• Diseases: The variety is tolerant to powdery mildew, but susceptible to apple scab (requires regular protection).
• Frost: Relatively good frost resistance.
