Analysis of resistant apple trees from Latvia: Dace, Edīte, Roberts, and Gita
An Analysis of Resistant Apple Trees: Dace, Edīte, Roberts, and Gita
Modern fruit growing, whether commercial or in the home garden, is increasingly focused on varieties that combine historical hardiness with modern demands for taste and ecological cultivation. A key factor for success is the selection of cultivars with genetically encoded resistance, especially against apple scab, which is the most significant apple disease worldwide. Such varieties allow for a significant reduction in chemical treatments, saving not only the grower's labor but also the environment.
"Modern breeding successfully combines genetic resistance with a high utility value of the fruit—from taste and size to storability."
In this analysis, we take a detailed look at four modern varieties from the Latvian Institute of Horticulture in Dobele: 'Dace', 'Edīte', 'Roberts', and 'Gita'. They are all united by a key trait—resistance to scab (Vf/Rvi6 gene).
1. Analysis of the 'Dace' Variety
'Dace' is a Latvian autumn to early winter apple variety characterized by early bearing, regular and high yields, and attractive fruits. It is resistant to scab (Vf/Rvi6 gene) and, thanks to its compact growth, is ideal for modern training systems.
'Dace' represents the typical "low-maintenance" apple tree, a result of modern breeding efforts aimed at combining high utility value with low growing requirements. Its medium-small and compact growth makes it ideal for intensive growing systems, such as slender spindles or fruit walls, where high efficiency can be achieved in a small area. An important agronomical trait is its tendency for self-regulation of fruit set. Unlike many other large-fruited varieties, manual thinning is not necessary, as the tree optimizes the number of fruits it can nourish to a premium size. The result is consistently large and uniform apples each year with an attractive red blush and a sweet-tart flavor dominated by sweetness. Due to its adaptability and easy shaping, it is predestined for modern gardens and commercial orchards.
Pomological Profile: 'Dace'
- Origin: Latvia ('BM41497' × 'Eksotika', 2009)
- Fruit: Large to very large (70–100 mm), red, with a waxy bloom.
- Taste: Sweet-tart with a prevalence of sweetness, very tasty (11–14% Brix).
- Resistance: Scab resistant (Vf gene). Can be susceptible to powdery mildew and fruit rot in some years.
- Storability: Until January, in ULO storage until March.
2. Analysis of the 'Edīte' Variety
'Edīte' is a new Latvian early winter apple variety with complex disease resistance and very attractive, brightly colored fruits. It is suitable for organic growing, ideally in better growing locations.
The 'Edīte' variety is an example of breeding focused on complex resistance. In addition to genetic scab resistance, it also shows good field resistance to powdery mildew, fruit rot, and canker, which is crucial for organic cultivation. From a grower's perspective, it is interesting for its spreading growth habit with a tendency for branches to become bare, which requires a specific pruning approach focused on renewing fruiting wood. The onset of full bearing is slower, but then it bears regularly. The fruits are more acidic at harvest, but their main quality emerges after several weeks of storage, when the acid content decreases and the taste becomes harmoniously sweet-tart. This "cellar ripening" process makes it an excellent variety for gradual winter and spring use. Due to its medium frost hardiness, it is recommended for warmer and protected locations.
Pomological Profile: 'Edīte'
- Origin: Latvia (‘Latkrimson’ × BM41497, 2012)
- Fruit: Medium to large (70–80 mm), with a bright orange-red color.
- Taste: Sweet-tart (after storage), crisp and juicy (12–14% Brix).
- Resistance: Complex resistance – scab resistant (Vf), good against other diseases. Medium frost hardiness.
- Storability: 4–5 months (until the end of February).
3. Analysis of the 'Roberts' Variety
'Roberts' is an early, disease-resistant Latvian summer apple variety characterized by early bearing and very attractive fruits. It is highly resistant to scab (Vf/Rvi6 gene) and has high frost hardiness.
'Roberts' fills an important niche in the summer apple assortment, which often features higher susceptibility to diseases. Its high genetic scab resistance combined with high frost hardiness makes it a very reliable choice. The fruits are visually extremely attractive due to their dark, purple-red color covering almost the entire surface, enhanced by a strong waxy bloom. The taste is best when the fruit ripens fully on the tree, developing its full sweet-tart aroma. As with most summer varieties, its storage life is limited. A slight tendency toward biennial bearing can be corrected with proper agrotechnics, such as summer pruning and fruit thinning. Its gradual ripening is an advantage for home gardens.
Pomological Profile: 'Roberts'
- Origin: Latvia (BM414967 × 'Eksotika', 2009)
- Fruit: Large to very large, dark red.
- Taste: Sweet-tart, aromatic, good (11–12% Brix).
- Resistance: Scab resistant (Vf), high frost hardiness. Medium resistance to other diseases.
- Storability: Short, approximately 2 months.
4. Analysis of the 'Gita' Variety
'Gita' is an early autumn Latvian variety, prized for its early onset of abundant and regular bearing. It is scab resistant (Vf/Rvi6 gene) and suitable for commercial orchards and home gardens.
The 'Gita' variety is a reliable producer of quality apples at the beginning of autumn. Although the tree grows vigorously, its canopy is easy to shape by pruning, with summer shoot shortening being particularly recommended to promote better branching. The fruits are large and visually very attractive due to the almost complete coverage of dark red color. The flesh is firm and crisp at harvest, gradually softening during storage, which is typical for varieties with 'Melba' in their pedigree. It requires moderate fruit thinning to achieve maximum size. Thanks to its traits, especially the combination of resistance and high yield, it is valued in the commercial sector.
Pomological Profile: 'Gita'
- Origin: Latvia (‘Liberty’ × ‘Melba’, 2009)
- Fruit: Large to very large (70–80 mm), dark red.
- Taste: Sweet-tart, good, tasty (11–14% Brix).
- Resistance: Scab resistant (Vf), good frost hardiness. Medium resistance to other diseases.
- Storability: 2–3 months.
