The French hybrid chestnut MARAVAL is a large-fruited and resistant variety.
We present a proven chestnut cultivar, which is the result of breeding work in the French region of Ardèche. This variety, officially recognized in 1986, was created by crossing Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata) and European chestnut (Castanea sativa), combining the best characteristics of both parents – exceptional hardiness and top-quality fruit.
The tree is characterized by medium growth vitality and forms a compact, well-structured crown, reaching a practical height of around 8 meters when mature. It has an exceptionally strong root system, which makes it not only a productive tree but also a first-class rootstock for other chestnut varieties thanks to its excellent compatibility. It finds optimal growing conditions in locations up to 300 meters above sea level.
As it is a cross-pollinated cultivar, the presence of another chestnut tree nearby to serve as a pollinator (e.g., other varieties of C. sativa or C. crenata) is key to achieving a rich harvest. The reward for proper pollination is fruit of exceptional size with attractive mahogany-red skin and high gloss. One of the greatest advantages of this variety is its rapid transition to full fruiting, so you won't have to wait long years for the first harvest.
The fruit ripens during October. Freshly harvested chestnuts will remain fresh for about a month under normal conditions. For long-term preservation of their freshness and taste, cold storage at a temperature between -1 °C and 4 °C is ideal. Storing them in a plastic bag effectively prevents them from drying out and losing quality.
This chestnut is highly valued for its robustness. It shows a high degree of resistance to the dreaded parasitic fungus Phytophthora ramorum and is also reliably resistant to winter frosts. Thanks to its complex characteristics, it is an ideal choice for both large-scale commercial plantings and gardeners who want to grow their own crop of first-class chestnuts.
