The 'Maraval' chestnut is a proven French hybrid for your garden. It is a top-quality hybrid chestnut variety, the result of targeted crossbreeding between Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata) and European chestnut (Castanea sativa). This cultivar, originating in the Ardèche region of France and registered in 1986, combines excellent resistance with exceptional fruit quality. It is ideal for growers looking for reliability and a bountiful harvest.
'Maraval' is characterized by moderately vigorous growth and forms a semi-upright crown with fewer side branches. It has a robust root system, which makes it valuable as a rootstock for other varieties. Another advantage is its ability to reproduce vegetatively. The variety thrives best at altitudes of up to 400 meters above sea level.
To ensure a harvest, cross-pollination is necessary, which means planting another chestnut tree nearby (for example, another variety of C. sativa or C. crenata). The reward is generously sized fruits with a shiny surface and a rich mahogany-red color. A significant advantage is the tree's rapid onset of full fruiting after planting.
The fruits ripen in the mid-early season, usually in early October. At normal room temperature, they will remain fresh for about four weeks. If you want to store them for a longer period, it is recommended to keep them in the refrigerator at temperatures between -1 and 4 °C. Placing them in a plastic bag will prevent them from drying out and maintain their premium quality.
This cultivar is notable for its resistance to the dangerous parasitic fungus Phytophthora ramorum and is reliably frost-resistant. These characteristics make it an excellent choice for commercial orchards and for gardeners who want to grow their own tasty, large chestnuts.
