The 'Vulcan' variety is a lifesaver for growers in colder and harsher climates. This Canadian cultivar shocks with its ability to withstand extreme frosts and its very good tolerance to fungal diseases (including peach leaf curl). Thanks to its firm and meaty flesh, it is an absolute top-tier choice for home and commercial processing—canned peaches will retain their perfect shape, and the flesh does not fall apart.

Variety Characteristics

Tree

• Vigor and Blooming: Medium vigor. Blooms mid-season with medium-sized pink flowers.
• Pollination and Requirements: The variety is fully self-fertile. It is undemanding and, unlike many other peaches, tolerates light shade quite well.

Fruit

• Size and Shape: Medium to large fruits (average weight 120 g), round to round-oval, slightly asymmetrical in shape.
• Color and Skin: The orange base color is 60 to 80% covered with a dark red marbled and dotted blush. The skin is quite firm with fine fuzz.
• Flesh and Pit: Deep yellow, very firm, meaty, and juicy. Note: As is common for varieties bred for processing, the flesh clings to the pit (clingstone), and the firmer skin may be slightly noticeable when eaten fresh.
• Taste and Use: Pleasant and sweetish (but not overly sweet). It achieves a high rating in tastings (4.7 out of 5). It is versatile—great eaten fresh, but it completely excels in canning and freezing.
