The 'James Grieve' apple tree is an old Scottish variety, bred in Edinburgh before 1893. It is known for its medium to large sized fruit, which has a yellow-green base colour with an orange-red cheek. The flesh is creamy, juicy and refreshing, with a pronounced acidity at the beginning of ripening, which gradually changes to a sweeter flavour. The fruit ripens in September and is suitable for both direct consumption and culinary use, retaining its shape when cooked.
The trees on the M26 rootstock reach a height of 2,4 to 3,6 metres, making them suitable for smaller gardens.
M26 is a semi-dwarf rootstock which provides early fruiting, usually after 2 to 3 years, and requires support during the early years of growth.
'James Grieve' is partly self-pollinating, but the presence of other varieties improves yield.
It is also a good pollinator for other varieties. The tree is frost tolerant and suitable for growing in colder areas.
It is important to provide a well-drained soil and a sunny site when growing. Regular pruning promotes healthy growth and fruit quality. 'James Grieve' is a popular variety for its reliable yield and versatile fruit.
