Plum (Prunus domestica) 'Tuleu Gras'
Traditional Romanian variety with excellent taste, mother of many modern varieties.
'Tuleu Gras' (translated as "Fat Tuleu") is a very old autochthonous Romanian variety that served as a basis for breeding many modern varieties (e.g., 'Centenar', 'Dâmbovița'). It is sought after for its excellent sweet taste, crunchy flesh, and high yield, although it requires a pollinator.
Main advantages of the variety:
- Excellent sweet and aromatic taste.
- High and regular yield.
- Crunchy and juicy flesh.
- Stone separates well from the flesh.
- Universal usage (excellent for jams and juices).
Origin and Registration
- Country of origin: Romania
- Origin: Autochthonous natural hybrid (chance seedling).
- Meaning of name: "Fat Tuleu"
Variety Characteristics
Tree
- Vigor: Medium to strong.
- Crown: Wide, well-branched.
Fruit
- Size and Weight: Medium size, 40 – 60 g.
- Shape and Color: Ellipsoidal (oval), symmetrical. The skin is thin, dark purple with a strong bluish waxy bloom.
- Flesh: Yellow-green, crunchy, and juicy.
- Taste: Sweet, finely aromatic, balanced.
- Stone: Freestone (separates from flesh).
- Usage: Universal – fresh consumption, processing (compotes, jams, nectars, juices).
Resistance and Requirements
- Resistance: Has good resistance to diseases and adverse conditions.
Cultivation Recommendations
- Pollination: Self-sterile (androsterile). Pollen is sterile, so it absolutely requires a pollinator (e.g., 'Anna Späth', 'Agen', 'Stanley') and cannot pollinate other varieties itself.
Harvest and Storage
- Harvest time: Mid-August to September.
- Yield: High and regular.
