Rowan / Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia) 'Doch Kubovoy'

A highly productive Russian variety with large fruits and an excellent taste completely free of astringency or bitterness.

The 'Doch Kubovoy' variety is at the absolute top tier among fruiting rowans. It is highly prized for its massive, regular yields and beautiful oblong berries, from which unpleasant astringency has been completely bred out. Thanks to its great taste and exceptionally high vitamin content, it is perfect for versatile processing as well as for eating fresh straight from the tree.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Absence of astringency: Excellent dessert flavor (rated 4.5 out of 5), completely free of bitterness.
  • Extreme yield: Its harvest volume significantly surpasses many other common varieties.
  • Large fruits: An average weight of 1.8 g makes picking and processing much easier.
  • Nutritional powerhouse: Contains up to 30% dry matter and is exceptionally rich in Vitamin C, carotene, and P-active substances.
  • Universal use and enormous frost resistance.

Origin and Registration

  • Origin: Russia (Federal Scientific Center of I. V. Michurin, Michurinsk). Breeders: T. K. Poplavskaja and A. S. Tichonova.
  • Registration: Application for registration was submitted in 1987, and it was officially entered into the state register of varieties in 1999.

Variety Characteristics

Tree
  • Vigor and Habit: Medium vigor tree. It forms a somewhat sparse crown with a typical broom-like shape.
  • Shoots and Leaves: Shoots are thick, straight, and greenish-grey. The dark green pinnate leaves have finely serrated-crenate margins.
Fruit
  • Size and Shape: Very large for a rowan (average weight 1.8 g) with an attractive, slightly oblong shape.
  • Color and Flesh: The skin is bright orange, while the flesh is bright yellow.
  • Taste: Excellent, sweet and sour, but completely lacking astringency or bitterness. It achieves top scores in professional tastings.
  • Composition: The berries are literally packed with nutrients—containing 30% dry matter, 9% sugars, 76 mg/100 g of Vitamin C, and 8 mg/100 g of carotene.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost and Adaptability: The variety is officially approved and recommended for cultivation in all regions of Russia, including the coldest ones, which testifies to its extreme frost resistance and overall hardiness.
  • Requirements: It is a highly adaptable and undemanding tree, suitable for various climatic and soil conditions.
Cultivation Recommendations
  • Use: Thanks to its oblong, above-average size berries with no bitterness, this is a universal variety. Excellent for drying, making marmalades, healthy juices, syrups, and for fresh consumption.
Harvest and Yield
  • Yield Onset: The tree usually starts bearing fruit in the 5th year after planting.
  • Harvest Time: Early autumn variety.
  • Yield: Considered an extremely high-yielding variety. In agricultural trials, it achieved average yields of over 36 t/ha, leaving control varieties far behind.
