Plum (Prunus domestica) 'Ance'

A new Latvian variety with an early harvest and a honey-like taste.

'Ance' is an attractive new Latvian plum variety that yields its harvest as early as the beginning of August. Its greatest advantage is its delicious, sweet taste with a distinct honey undertone, which the fruits develop at full maturity. The plums are medium-sized, a beautiful amber-yellow color, and the flesh separates well from the stone. The tree is characterized by strong, healthy growth and good disease resistance, making it a rewarding and low-maintenance variety for any garden.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Unique honey-like taste: The fruits are exceptionally sweet and flavorful at full ripeness.
  • Early ripening: One of the first plums of the season, ripening in early August.
  • Abundant and regular yields: Delivers a reliable harvest every year.
  • Freestone: The stone separates easily from the flesh, making it easy to eat and process.
  • Good disease resistance: Healthy growth and low susceptibility to common plum diseases.

Origin and Registration

  • Country of origin: Latvia, Dobele
  • Breeder: Dr. Edīte Kaufmane
  • Year of registration: 2018

Variety Characteristics

Tree

Growth is strong, forming a healthy, spreading crown. It yields regularly and abundantly. The variety is cross-pollinated; to ensure a rich harvest, it needs another plum variety blooming at the same time nearby.

Fruit
  • Size and shape: Medium (30–45 g), elliptical in shape.
  • Skin: A beautiful amber-yellow color at maturity with a light pinkish blush.
  • Flesh: Yellow, medium-firm, and juicy. The stone is freestone to semi-freestone.
  • Taste: Very good, sweet, with a honey-like flavor at full ripeness.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Diseases: It has good resistance and low susceptibility to shot hole disease and plum rust.
Growing Recommendations
  • Use: An excellent dessert variety intended primarily for fresh consumption.
  • Pollination: As it is cross-pollinated, it requires the presence of another plum tree as a pollinator.
Harvest and Storage
  • Harvest time: Early, in the first half of August. The fruits hold well on the tree.
  • Eating maturity: Immediately after harvest.
  • Transportability: Good, if the fruits are harvested before reaching full "honey" ripeness. Fully ripe fruits are softer and do not transport as well.
